Theo Vilje’s Birthday Story
February Wrapped in Love and Celebration
At the beginning of February, we start each day by singing in Sami and counting in Sami, proudly showing the flag. For a significant part of my life, the culture of the indigenous Norwegian people—the Sami—played a big part of my life. It’s wonderful for Theo Vilje to hear the language and understand that we have indigenous people in our country.
Love
February is a month of love and celebration. Valentine’s Day traditions adapted for toddlers bring us joy as we share handmade crafts and tokens of affection. These traditions, which we’ve carried through the years, now include Theo Vilje more and more as he gets older and can participate in different ways. By the time he turned two, he especially enjoyed the Valentine’s Day giveaways. He would run around in our garden making sure everybody got a card in their hand or tied to their door.
Birthday
Of course, February also marks Theo Vilje’s birthday, a time we look forward to with excitement. He think birthdays means some kind of whipped cream, so he mostly looks forward to that. We love spending it with family and friends, celebrating the day with small gifts for toddlers (something needed, something wanted, something to wear, and something to read), something good to eat, and, of course, his birth story.
